The Church of England’s second black bishop was consecrated at a ceremony that took place at the Southwark Cathedral today.

Nigerian born Reverend Prebendary Woyin Karowei Dorgu, 58, was consecrated as the 13th Bishop of Woolwich at 12:30 noon.

Revd Dorgu, a medical doctor by training, whose nomination was approved by the Queen, became the first black person to be appointed bishop since 1996.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby who presided the ordination greeted the congregation before introducing the service.

He said “God calls his people to follow Christ, and forms us into a royal priesthood, a holy nation, to declare the wonderful deeds of him who has called us out of darkness into his marvellous light.”

In the sermon, the bishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, the only other black bishop currently in the Church of England explained that the new bishop’s name means “priest.”

Dr Sentamu then advised bishop Dorgu to “live out his baptismal name.”
