Nigeria Commissions Data Collection Platform For Monitoring Of SDGs
The National Bureau of Statistics yesterday in Abuja organized a validation workshop of the baseline indicators for monitoring the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in Nigeria.

In his remarks, Statistician General of the Federation, Dr Yemi Kale represented by the Director of Macro Mr. Edwin C Efidi explained that Nigeria was the first country in Africa to produce data for the monitoring of SDGs.

He explained that the early development of measuring data for SDGs marked a clear departure from the MDGs experience where monitoring of the goals and production of indicators did not commence until midway through its implementation making it extremely difficult to accurately track progress.

“I have no doubt in my mind that with the early commencement of the monitoring process of the SDGs, we stand a better chance of achieving the set goals and meeting our targets and in the spirit of the framework, ensure that we leave no one behind. The validation of these indicators is a useful first step in ensuring that we have a complete set of baseline indicators produced in a reliable and sustainable manner from well established data sources,” he said.

On her part, Head of Demographic and social statistics of NBS Mrs Patricia M Eweama said the SDGs comprises of 17 goals, 169 targets and 230 indicators which was adopted during the 70th session of United Nations General Assembly in September 2015.

According to her, one of the major problems identified in the implementation of the MDGs was lack of data for measurement of progress. Thus, in the implementation of SDGs, emphasis is placed on accountable governance and data revolution which requires adequate data to plan, monitor and evaluate progress in its implementation. ”I am aware that participants here are drawn from key sectors that have provided data with which the baseline report has been written to serve as benchmark against which implementation of SDGs can be measured,” she said.
