Property worth millions of naira were destroyed and several residents fled for their lives as hoodlums attacked the residents of Alagbaka Extension community in Akure, the Ondo State capital.
The Punch newspaper reports the attackers claimed that the community belonged to them due to a court verdict. They also warned the fleeing residents not to return to their homes.
The attack took place throughout the weekend, residents say.
They told the newspaper that no fewer than 300 houses were destroyed. They alleged that the attackers were hired by a prominent family in the area who is claiming ownership of the land.
The unnamed family had won a land dispute case at the high court, but the judgment is being appealed at the Court of Appeal.
A resident, Olusegun Adu-Peters, said the hoodlums and the family took the law into their own hands while the case was still in court.
Adu-Peters said, “The government and the security agencies should intervene to prevent the breakdown of law and order. All the parties should wait until the final determination of the matter by the court before taking any action. Nobody has any power to take the laws into his or her own hands.”
