BAUCHI TOWN BOILS AS GOVERNOR APPOINTS SSG EMIR

Youth in Misau town of Bauchi state took to the streets early Thursday after the announcement of the appointment of the Secretary to the Bauchi State Government, Ahmed Suleiman, as the 11th Emir of Misau and successor to late Muhammadu Manga III who died on August 17. Misau, alongside Jamare and Katagun, is a first class emirate in Bauchi State.

Residents said that there was tension in the town on Wednesday when news filtered in that the state governor, Mohammed Abubakar, was planning to appoint his ally from a different ruling family, against any one of scions of late emir or a close member of the Gwani Mukhtar ruling dynasty.

Upon hearing the announcement, the irate mob went on rampage, setting bonfires in the streets, and setting a section of the palace alight.

Top among those vying for the throne is Aliyu Manga, seen as the heir apparent.

The Bauchi State Police command Public Relations Officer DSP Mohammed told our correspondent that “this morning around 12 noon some group of youth went on rampage burning tyres on the street ‎as a result police quickly responded and put the situation under control.”

He added that nine suspects were arrested by the police.
